Also known as the backcut, is the last of three cuts required to fell a tree. Located on the opposite side of the tree from the face and at least 1 inch above the horizontal cut of the face. The 1″ is referred to as stump shot and prevents the tree from kicking back over the stump toward the person operating the chainsaw. The felling cut must never be continued to the point where no holding wood remains.
